RESULTS

Wolves Taekwondo at Inaugural ACT State OPEN Taekwondo Championships 2011

by Senior Instructor Paul Verstegen

A small team from Wolves Taekwondo competed at the recent Taekwondo Australia ACT State Open Championships held at Exhibition Park in Canberra on the 17th of July.
All up, the five member team brought back 4 GOLD, 2 SILVER and 2 BRONZE medals.
The individual players’ results were as follows:

Dylan Fulcher, Male 10-11 Years Black Belt 50-55kg - GOLD Medal AND Male 12-13 Years Black Belt 50-55kg - SILVER Medal.
Dylan fought in two age divisions in this tournament. He won the gold medal for his own age division with a score of 14 to 1. Dylan’s second match was in an age division up from his own so that the other player would have a match. This was a high scoring match with a final result of 16 to 28 giving Dylan the Silver medal.

Elizabeth Curry, Female 16-17 Years Black Belt 59-63kg - BRONZE Medal.
This was a difficult match for Elizabeth against a much more experienced player that normally fights in the women’s open division. Elizabeth’s hard fought battle ended with a score of 12 to 23 gaining her a Bronze medal placing.

Lloyd Moran, Male 31-40 Years Red Belt OVER 87kg - BRONZE Medal.
Lloyd, one of Wolves’ veteran players, was moved up to fight in the heavy weight division as there were no other veteran players in his own division on the day. Lloyd lost his match with a close score of 1 to 4 which still gave him a Bronze medal placing.

Paul Verstegen, Male 31-40 Years 74-80kg Black Belt - SILVER Medal.
Paul was uncontested in his own age division and instead competed against competitors that were up to 19 years younger. Paul lost his finals match with a score of 4 to 17 placing him in the Silver medal position.

Dearne Fulcher, Female 31-40 Years Black Belt 57-62kg - GOLD Medal AND Female OPEN Black Belt 57-62kg - GOLD Medal AND Female 31-40 Years 2nd Dan Individual Poomsae - GOLD Medal.
In the ACT state tournament, Dearne dominated all of her sparring matches in both her own veteran’s division as well as the hard fought women’s open division. She also won gold in her taekwondo poomsae or patterns competition. Dearne had to fight her way through three full matches in the OPEN division. She won her preliminary match 14 to 11. Dearne’s semi-final score was 22 to 18 and her score for the OPENS final, against a much younger player from the ACT was 28 to 19.  In Dearne’s veteran’s match she again dominated with a score of 11 to 0 easily winning the Gold medal.

All of the players were congratulated by their head coach on the day, Senior Instructor Paul Verstegen, for their excellent results and for their exceptional sportsmanship. Thanks also goes to the coaches, Dearne, Lloyd and assistant coach Nicholas Verstegen for their fine effort at the first ever ACT State Open Tournament.
